Do they have anything plugged into the second monitor port that would make the PC believe there is one? When you hover over the icon of the application right click and say maximise. When you close it down again and reopen it will remember its settings.

I used to get this all the time when I had people going from work to home. At work they would have 2 monitors and open the app on the 2nd monitor. At home they would only have a single screen. I had to talk people through this several times during lockdown. I’ve seen this same behavior from one particular user who opens lots and lots of windows. I’ve never been able to figure it out but generally when it happens 3 times in the past 3 years the edge of the off screen window is at the edge of the screen.

It’s not always readily apparent but I can generally grab the edge of the window and expand it, pull it into view, shrink it back down and then everything is fine. I’ve always assumed the user pushed the window out of the way just a bit too far but who knows.

I’ve seen this in the past where a window will open up off-screen. Admittedly, I’ve not seen it happen in quite awhile, but this was sometimes a problem as far back as Windows 98, possibly longer. One option that has not yet been mentioned is to click on the app on the task bar to make it the active window, then hold down the windows key and then press the left arrow or if you believe the app to be off the left side of the screen, use the right arrow which after two or three presses should move the window onto your active monitor.

The first press should shift the app to half screen. The next press should then move it to the next screen if it exists. If by the fourth press of the arrow key you do not see your app, then it may be off the opposite direction. Same goes for up and down. I hope this will help as well.

I don’t think that the Window is present on a non existent 2nd monitor more likely just off the edge of the viewable canvas of the single main monitor. Of course you can check this in the Windows Display Settings to see if it has in fact detected a 2nd display.

This happens to my users that have laptops, and move from having multiple displays and a docking station Dell , sometimes then going home and moving to less screens, or just the laptop screen.

They will have the program open on screen 2, close the laptop or move to a different location and try to reopen the program. The laptop will still think it has the same layout as above This is a trial an error option You may have to try many different variations until part of the window, shows up.

Once all the applications have snapped back to the main laptop display, I then can safely sleep or hibernate the laptop and be fairly confident that I won’t be needing to chase down any rogue windows open on phantom displays! Well I finally had this happen to a user again so I could try everyone’s recommendations. The virtual desktop was not the fix, although I thought for sure it would be after reading the responses here. But the application would just stay minimized, no matter what I tried to do.

Simply enough, it was just right clicking the application thumbnail on the taskbar and messing with those to eventually get it up. Login or sign up to reply to this topic. Didn’t find what you were looking for?
